Whether you’re visiting during the warm and humid summer where it stays light until the wee hours of the morning, of you’re going amongst the glistening winter snow, Helsinki has something to offer for everyone.

The city pride’s itself in individuality and independence. Helsinki’s sense of style is unpretentious, fiercely unique, vibrant and friendly. From endless strips of calming seashores, untamed nature, countless islands, and a bustling city center, Helsinki offers a diverse experience centered around innovation and sustainability.

Many are surprised by how different Helsinki is from the other Nordic capitols. Even those visiting from Sweden are usually pretty surprised by this! Where to Stay in Helsinki

Stay at Marski by Scandic

Centrally located directly in front of a popular tram spot, and just a 6 minute walk from Helsinki’s Central Train Station, Marski by Scandic is the perfect place to start your visit. Modernly decorated with perfect Finnish design, Marski by Scandic has a variety of rooms to choose from, including some with saunas! The breakfast buffet is beyond anything I’ve experienced, complete with an espresso machine dedicated to vegan oat-milk-based coffees, a waffle bar, more fresh berries than you could dream, and overnight oats with hints of cardamom that will make you scream. For real, it’s delicious.

Where to Eat in Helsinki

Restaurant Grön

If high-quality ingredients was the assignment, Grön would take the cake! Michelin star awarded Restaurant Grön prides itself on plant-based, seasonal, organic and wild ingredients with Nordic flavors. The menu changes depending on what’s available and in season, and the head chef often brings ingredients freshly harvested from his own garden. The tasting menu comes complete with wine-pairings or freshly made and equally delicious juices if alcohol isn’t to your taste. I highly recommend trying the Finnish Negroni, as it was honestly one of the best tasting cocktails I’ve ever had!

Restaurant Elm

Set amongst a backyard garden, surrounded by flowers, and located at the edge of Kaivopuisto Park, Restaurant Elm is the ultimate lunch and brunch locale. Inspired by Mediterranean cuisine, many recipes based on the dishes the owners grew up on. With a gorgeous interior and a sustainability-focused mindset, Restaurant Elm is a can’t-miss when exploring Helsinki.

Lonna’s Restaurant

If you find yourself taking the ferry to Lonna Island, it’s absolutely necessary to stay for dinner while watching the sunset. Lonna’s restaurant is open during the summer, serving island guests from May until the end of September. The restaurant serves seasonal dishes, giving a modern twist on traditional classics, focusing on fresh Finnish ingredients.

Kirsikka

Located on the 2nd floor of Hakaniemi Market Hall, Kirsikka serves Finnish classics in a laid-back atmosphere. If you plan to explore Hakaniemi Market Hall, this is a great stop for lunch while you make your way sampling the food through the complex. You can catch the weekday lunch menu Tuesdays-Thursdays, or the á la carte menu in the evenings and Saturdays.

Ravintola Kappeli

Formally known as “The Chapel” in Finnish, and dating back to 1867, Ravintola Kappeli is a cafe, restaurant and bar is located in one of the most beautiful buildings in central Helsinki. If you take a stroll through Esplanade Park (also known as Helsinki’s Cat Walk—meow!) you’ll see Kappeli’s ornate glass and metal walls at its heart. Grab a pastry, a hearty salad, or some salmon soup, and find a place out on the terrace to enjoy the sun during the summer months. Check out a bit of Kappeli’s fascinating history! Enjoy the Sauna at Lonna Island

This cute little island called Lonna, just 150 meters long, is part of the Suomenlinna district of Helsinki, and is a must visit if you find yourself in the city during the summer months! The island’s main attraction? It’s complex of saunas. Do it the Finnish way! With gender-neutral changing rooms available and gender-neutral saunas, put on your swim-wear and warm yourself up in the 2 level wooden sauna while enjoying the view of the surrounding water. Once you get your fill of heat, walk out to the water and enjoy a refreshing swim. There’s nothing like it, and is an absolute must for anyone visiting Helsinki!

Go for a Swim and Sauna at Allas Sea Pool

If you’re looking to relax close to the city center, and perhaps in a bit of luxury, check out Allas Sea Pool. The complex is located on Helsinki’s historic waterfront and has a beautiful view of the city. There are multiple saunas, including internal gender-neutral saunas, and exclusively male and female clothing-optional saunas located adjacent to the outdoor pools. As far as swimming, there’s a natural sea pool, and 2 large heated pools to enjoy. Complete with a cafe and large outdoor seating area, Allas Sea Pools is a fantastic place to spend time and relax after a rowdy night out.

Take Photos at Huvilakatu

If you’ve seen iconic instagram photos from Helsinki, it’s likely you’ve seen Huvilakatu. This set of pastel-colored historic homes is straight out of a fairytale. The street is lined with towering gorgeous row-houses, and provides the perfect backdrop for a photoshoot.

Visit Amos Rex Museum

There is an incredible number of fantastic museums to visit in Helsinki, but if you’re to choose just one, Amos Rex is something you cannot miss! Amos Rex is a new kind of museum space, designed to not only be an exhibit for art, but also a community space to spend time and hang out. It’s open experimentation and a place for community collaboration. Check out the modern exhibits and enjoy the eclectic and energetic Finnish attitude.

Go Shopping on Aleksanterinkatu

If you’re looking to shop, Aleksanterinkatu is the place to be. Centrally located close to Helsinki’s train station, this is where Finland’s largest department stores and biggest brand names are located. On any given day, you’ll find many strolling through on their way to the many bars, restaurants, and shops located within this historic district.
